to build decentralized social networks

Your data and privacy are being exploited and monetized by today’s social networks. It’s time for a change. We deserve the right to control our data.

It’s time for a new breed of social networks - where power is taken back from a single authority and control is returned to you, to me, to all of us. It’s time to decentralize social networks.

This is a movement toward greater personal freedom, but it takes an empowered community to build this future.
Blockstack Public Benefit Corporation is taking a stand and leading a commitment of $1,000,000 ($100,000 each to 10 teams) to fund social network dapps that rewrite the fundamental basis of how we connect together.

How to Get Started

Blockstack empowers developers to take action when change is needed. Our community has built the infrastructure on which decentralized apps of any kind can be built - a platform of tools for integrating identity, storage, and payments.

If you aren’t OK with the current model - we challenge you to change it. Our developer platform gives you the freedom to design the user experience you imagine for your friends, your community, or the world. Let's reimagine how the world connects.

Portability
Users can seamlessly take their social graph to different apps
Social graph and friend list are locked in to preserve monopoly
Free Speech
User determines what content and ideas are acceptable
Platform determines what content and ideas are acceptable
Safety
Millions of data vaults make more work for hackers
Centralized data creates a honeypot for hackers
Privacy
Communication is encrypted end-to-end
Communication can be compromised by a central authority

How We'll Help You

$100,000
Demo at Developer Summit
Token Rewards

Each project that is accepted will receive $100K to build the social network of their dreams, and accepted projects will demo their dapp at the next Blockstack summit. A team could be just one person, or several. Regardless of size, we’re looking for the collective ability to build, grow, and scale a network.

In addition, when the Blockstack blockchain goes live, Blockstack will send regular payouts of its native token — the Stacks token — to developers of highly-rated apps. You can learn more about the app-rewards mining in Blockstack’s token white paper.

“People mostly think about blockchains taking power from financial middlemen. The reality is the technology can also take power from information middlemen who control what we consume and how we connect with each other online. With Blockstack’s developer tools and decentralized network, we can build something that puts our users in control.”
